Why summer retreat?

Out of the city and into the country

During the twenties, the term summer resort developed. The aristocracy went on vacation to their summer residence in the countryside and the city dwellers sought peace and relaxation in nature. Romantic picnics in the countryside were very fashionable.

Not only for the nobility

In the Brothers Grimm dictionary, the term Sommerfrische is defined as "the recreational stay of city dwellers in the countryside at summertime" or "the city dwellers' desire for the countryside in summer." The word Sommerfrische thus refers to both the seasonal move from the city to the countryside and the destination. It is the time when one takes a break from work and does something.
Having a summer residence was common among the nobility. Since the industrialization, favored by the construction of railroads, the custom of summer residence passed to the upper middle class. Those who could not afford a summer residence of their own took up residence in inns or private quarters.

Burgeoning tourism

Accommodation was later joined by local entertainment for summer guests, also called summer visitors. The previously unknown open-air bathing at lakes became a popular pastime, as well as hiking or mountain climbing. Thus, summer resort and the beginning of tourism are closely connected.

Summer retreat in the Mühltal

The history of the summer resort in the Mühltal can also be traced back to the twenties of the last century. In 1901 a continuous road was built and the Mühltal changed from a place of work to a place of recreation. This also meant the arrival of the summer resort. More and more mills offered guest rooms and catering.
